The way of the Buyi

In collaboration with Maciej Marszał and Iga Mazur.
The relations between Buyi people were a significant inspiration in our designing process. They live in small communities, no bigger than one hundred families. Because of that, they are very close to each other. They spend most of their time together, both at work and free time, and that deepens their connections. Furthermore, in the Buyi culture, there are many regional dances and enchanting singing with self-made instruments. Respecting these traditions, we would like to provide a space that is to be much more than a canteen and kitchen. A space for friends and family meetings, a space for
a reunion.
More means space customized to its inhabitants’ needs. The most important element of the project, that is drawn on Buyi culture, is a cotton fabric. By using it, we can divide the space into different functional areas, and adapt it for musical concerts, dancing, various performances or just meeting with family
and friends. Due to the climatic conditions for this region – the low year’s temperature amplitude, and the functional traditions of Buyi’s housing – inhabitants spend more time outside. Therefore, the children and rest of the villagers can use our space after the closing time and integrate.
The project is based on a modular wooden construction inspired by a local traditional architecture. Only rooms, that are needed to be encased – the kitchen and library – are surrounded by plexiglass walls. Canteen is an open space with tables and chairs, that can also be adapted for other use. Curved roof, which surface does not exceed 100m2, is covered with slate. Typical Buyi’ colours are highlighted as their cultural heritage. Traditions are a very important aspect
in learning and growing up and thus, should be displayed and cherished at school.
